Project: The Winston property comprises over 200 acres of private in-holdings deep within the Elkhorn Wildlife Management Unit of the Helena National Forest. The land features sprawling grasslands, meadows, rolling hills with pockets of partially timbered, fire-damaged land. Roadless, undeveloped, secluded areas are often hard to come by, even in Montana. These lands are a safe-haven to local wildlife for grazing and breeding and provide security to a variety of species.
Phase I Purpose: Preserve winter range for wild elk grazing
Phase II Purpose: Purchase of approximately 150 additional in-holding acres of land and continued conservation of elk winter range.
Phase III Purpose: Purchase of approximately 100 additional in-holding acres of land and continued conservation of elk winter range.
Private in-holdings in the Elkhorn Mountains threatened the winter grazing range that wild elk. With help from the Montana Fish & Wildlife Conservation Trust, under the guidance of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the Helena National Forest Service, the Winston in-holdings conserve important elk winter range and prevent future development while maintaining limited public access to adjacent public lands.
Directions: Between Helena, Montana and Townsend, Montana on the west side of MT 287 within the Elkhorn Wildlife Management Unit of the Helena National Forest.
Restrictions: No Motorized Vehicles.
