Sponsor: US Fish & Wildlife Service

Year: 2011

Grant Amount: $50,000

Total Project Cost: $6,586,000

Project: The USFWS purchased this tract of land which is upstream of the Refuge and was threatened by subdivision and second home development. This Phase comes with significant water rights and is a major water recharge area for the Refuge lakes and wetlands.

Purpose: The project will provide access across private land to public lands; provide public recreational opportunities on private land; improve habitat effectiveness; protect migration corridors and winter range for moose, elk, sage grouse, and artic grayling; and improve water quality and riparian area health.

Directions: From West Yellowstone, MT take Highway 20 southwest for about 17 miles to Red Rock Pass Road, just south of Henry's Lake River. Turn west onto Red Rock Pass (you are entering Montana). Alaska Basin addition to the Refuge is down the hill westward one mile. The road you are now on is known as South Valley Road. The property is on the North side of the road. Property begins at road crossing of Hell Roaring Creek.
