Board of Directors

Two independent oversight boards, a Joint State-Federal Board and a Citizen Advisory Board, are responsible for ensuring the goals of the Trust are met. The management and administration of the Trust are the responsibilities of the Trust Management Board.

Montana Capital City Coordinator
U.S. Forest Service, Region One

John Hagengruber is the Montana Capital City Coordinator for the U.S. Forest Service’s Region One. Prior to joining the Forest Service, John served at the county and state government levels, working with shoreland/floodplain/wetland managementissues with the Dane County Dept. of Planning and Development (Madison, WI) and in the recreation and watershed management programs of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Since joining the Forest Service, John has served as a District recreation planner on the Lewis & Clark National Forest (Belt Creek / White Sulphur Springs Ranger Districts), Forest Recreation Planner and Forest Plan Revision ID Team member on the Bighorn National Forest (Sheridan, WY), and most recently as District Ranger on the Bridger-Teton National Forest (Buffalo Ranger District). John received a B.S. (Conservation Biology) from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and an M.S. (Resource Management) from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point.

David Allen serves as a Realty Specialist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Montana Realty Program, David works with willing sellers to acquire habitat for several National Wildlife Refuge units across the state. In his free time David loves backpacking, fishing, and canoeing with his wife Jessie and dog Ginger. David has worked for the National Wildlife Refuge System for five years and has a B.A. in Anthropology from Trinity University and a J.D. from Lewis and Clark Law School.

Citizens Advisory Board

Jay M. Erickson, Chair
Conservationists Representative

Jay Erickson has been a member of the Citizens Advisory Board since 2004. He represents the conservation community. He is a Managing Director for The Montana Land Reliance (MLR) which is Montana’s leading private land conservation group. MLR, for 34 years, has worked with landowners to protect nearly one million acres of Montana’s open space, wildlife habitat and agricultural lands. Jay is an attorney and has lived in Helena for twenty-five years. He was raised in Northwest Montana on the banks of Kootenai River and is a graduate of the University of Montana (JD) and the University of Denver (LLM). An avid outdoor enthusiast, he spends his free time backpacking, hiking, downhill and back country skiing and fly-fishing throughout Montana. He also enjoys big game hunting and upland bird hunting with this Brittanys.
